Germany ( Mühlstraße 267487 St. Martin )

Situated in St. Martin in the heart of the German Weinstrasse (Wine road) close to the mountains of the Haart. The terroir is mainly sandstone and basalt. The grapes are protected against sometimes fierce westerly winds by the forest that covers the mountains. Sankt Martin itself is a quaint, medieval village that remained intact during WWII and still has a lot of very well restored and meticulously kept buildings, most being wineries.
The Kiefer Family is operating the farm since1950 when they started with 3 hectares (30.000qm). Now three generations are working in the business which contains also a guesthouse and a restaurant
Phillip Kiefer is the winemaker since 2008. After university he changed the varietals that are produced adding Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc discontinuing older varieties like Kerner and Huxelrebe as they were wines for mass production. His strategy made an impact also on his fellow wine makers and the VDP made him a candidate for joining giving him even greater experience in learning the trade.
