Blue Slate

Save the Lunchtime Wine! It was one of these wonderful Sunday lunches with friends in my favorite Maltese restaurant by the sea. Over the years we have become regulars as we love the ambiance and the food, not the wine list. The owner freely admits that he doesn’t know wine but thankfully and more important he knows food and how to cook it. His Fenek is for me the best on the island and the seafood risotto hard to beat. As he doesn’t want to upset his cousin who is also his wine supplier he allows me to bring my own wine and charges me a moderate corkage fee. This puts me in a corner as I have now the responsibility to choose a wine that also is liked by my Sunday lunch comrades, a divers and critical bunch but thankfully all white wine winos. After a long contemplation my choice fell on the Blue Slate Riesling from Dr. Loosen situated at the upper Mosel region.

Why?  First of all because I am a real Riesling fan. This grape takes on the terroir in the taste like no other grape. Grow Riesling on limestone and you get a complete different wine as if it grown on Basalt or Sandstone or in this case on Slate, the predominat terroir at the Mosel valley.   Secondly because we just included this winery and this region to our portfolio and Dr. Loosen is a worldwide icon when it comes to Riesling.
Ernst Loosen is a Riesling fanatic praying the gospel of this grape all over the world. To meet him is difficult as he is virtually jetting all over the world. Even in pandemic times this summer when the US was shut for pure mortals like you and me Ernst got a visa in the category “of national interest to the USA” to speak at a wine conference in upstate New York. Take that, you Riesling ignorants for recognition. November 12th, the VDP (German Quality Wine Producers Association) had their yearly auction of wines and the 2013 Dr. Loosen Erdener Prälat Riesling GG fetched an unbelievable 4100 € for a 3l bottle.

But what makes this wine the perfect Lunchtime Wine? First of all the Mosel Rieslings have a bit of sugar – no not like Liebfrauenmilch as some of you might think, dry means here around 12 g/ltr but they have at the same time very high acidity that compensates the sugar. So, you get wines that have a full mouthfeel, far from being thin, with wonderful fruit aromas of green apples citrus and pronounced minerality. The minerality comes from the terroir and at the Mosel that is slate, here blue slate, a stone that stores the heat of the day and keeps the grapes warm in the cold autumn nights. This gives the grapes some more time to ripen and produce enough sugar for a full-bodied wine adding some flinty notes at the same time.   Already the romans discovered this 2000 years ago and they started the cultivation of wine in the Mosel valley making some of these vineyards the oldest and the steepest in Germany. Talking about steep, Dr. Loosens steepest vineyard has a slope of nearly 70 degrees. That means that all the work is done by hand no machines can be used and harvest has its special challenges.

The Slate provides vital nutrients sand gives the wine a mineral edge that enhances the high natural acidity. The vineyards are characterized by incredibly steep slopes, mineral richness and excellent drainage. This combination results in zippy, mineral-drenched wines that are fruity, crisp and very refreshing.

Dr. Loosen

Blue Slate Riesling

The wine is bright and pure with the classic white peach fruit and floral, flinty minerality that is so typical from blue slate. The lush and fruity mid-palate leads to a deliciously firm, delicate finish. This wine makes an elegant aperitif and is an excellent match for seafood, spicy Asian cuisine and lighter dishes.  As you can see the Blue Slate Kabinett from Dr.Loosen is a wine for many occasions and  with 12% alcohol it is not too heavy. This all makes it the perfect Wine for a sunny summers luncheon.”
