Alcohol free wine – hoax or helper?

Recently I read an interesting article in one of the many wine magazines. It was explaining how some of the world famous wineries in Germany established themselves and it started with the question
What have these German wineries in common? - Weins-Prüm            (Mosel) - Christofel Prüm        (Mosel) - Studert-Prüm        (Mosel) - Joh. Jos. Prüm        (Mosel) - Dr. Loosen            (Mosel) - Robert Weil            (Rheingau) - Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler    (Mosel) - S.A.Prüm            (Mosel) - Senfter            (Rheinhessen)

So, all the owners of these well known wineries are descendants of one man: Sebastian Alois Prüm who lived from 1794 to 1871 and who’s brother installed the Wehlener and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr (Sun clock) for the workers in the vineyards so they knew what time it was. Both sites, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, are famous appellations of Mosel wines.

Sebastian Alois had a son Mathias, who had 7 kids who's decendants all run the wineries listed above. It all started( the division of the large estate) after Mathias death in 1890 in combination with a wine-oriented marriage policy that formed these wineries.

Two Prüm daughters even married the same man, Zacharias Bergweiler. Obviously, one after the other, not at the same time. After Maria-Annas death in 1904 her sister Maria- Katherina took the sisters place.

Anna-Maria, the first wife, and Zacharias had two daughters.

Another Maria (1896-1989), married Wilhelm Weil, son of the founder of the internationally renown winery Robert Weil. Their grandson is still head of this internationally renown winery.

And

Maria Magdalena (1900- 1978)  married Dr. Adams. Their daughter then got married Dr. Loosen and two boys were the result of this marriage, Ernst and Thomas Loosen who both  run Dr. Loosen winery today.

So there you have it. The world known Winemakers Wilhelm Weil, Ernst Loosen and Katharina Prüm are all related.

And this is what the Prüm family has in common with the Habsburg Empire. Their motto in building an empire 400 years ago was “Others might fight wars, you Habsburg, marry”. So it is not surprising that the Prüm Dynasty has developed so many first class wineries that set and are still setting standards in German winemaking.

So it is no surprise that today’s message from a bottle comes from Ernst Loosen who was one of the first winemakers that experimented with Alcohol free wines. Especially for those who still adhere to the  New Years resolutions; more sport, less red meat and no alcohol, this might be a way to ease the withdraw.

With Dr. Lo you have the choice of a Riesling or a sparkling, they have one big advantage to other alcohol free wines we tried.

They taste good, very much like wine and not like modified fruit juice.

Before the process of removing the alcohol began, it all started with a 2019 Mosel Riesling that was already low in alcohol that had only the natural sweetness of the grape without any added sugar and had crisp acidity to give it balance. This base wine underwent a state-of-the-art alcohol removal process. The natural sweetness of the grape that had not been fermented, remained in the de-alcoholized wine and therefore no grape juice or sugar had to be added afterwards to enhance taste.

But let the man explain himself! Click here to hear it from Erst Loosen.
