Vines that have grown at an altitude of 300 meters in Kallstadt, very old vines, always very cool here, of course all ecological handicraft in the vineyard. Whole grapes, maceration for one night in the slowly rotating press, then pressing, fermented spontaneously in the wood and left in the fermentation tank on the full yeast until the end of winter. Then tapped and transferred to the steel with a good part of the fine yeast at the beginning of March. There it stays on the fine lees until June. On the one hand there is this pure limestone aroma from the Saumagen in the nose. One of the best locations in Germany with this high intensity. Nice print made of smoky quince, melon, yellow apple, underlaid with a citric-chalky background. Limestone minerality and lots of salt. Then there is so much phenolic pressure pushing out the back, so much dark minerality. The mouth shows orange zest, slim yellow fruit, but also really red peach, apricot. The whole thing ends in minerally melty, extract-rich pleasure and it remains this dreamlike fruit fullness, but underlined by the uncompromisingly gripping manner and the salty pressure. The Saumagen is the slimmest, but at the same time probably the most intense Riesling at Kuhn this year.
